A four hour event devoted entirely to sea turtles!  Have fun participating in a diverse array of turtle programs and activities!  All programs are free with park admission.  Crawl through a shrimp net, learn about our region's turtles, create a sea turtle craft of your own and much more!

The Friends of Brookgreen Gardens has a well deserved reputation for their exceptional fundraising events.  This year, An Evening Under the Palmettos, continues this tradition.
Located in the stately Palmetto Garden, this elegant black-tie occasion will feature cocktails, Lowcountry tapas, entertainment and a very limited silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind experiences and art that adds to the excitement of the evening.  Tickets are limited ($175 per person) and can be purchased by contacting "The Friends of Brookgreen" office at 843-235-6018.  Proceeds from "An Evening Under the Palmettos" will go to help create the "Waterfowl: Wings of Migration" exhibit at Brookgreen Gardens’ Lowcountry Zoo.  Over the past 20 years, The Friends of Brookgreen Gardens has raised over $2.4 million for Brookgreen Gardens projects through its fundraising events.

Founder’s Day Weekend

In May, the town of Surfside Beach will hold a Founder’s Day Weekend full of events starting May 2 from 4 pm to 8 pm with a beach music party on Surfside Drive.
On May 3, between 11 am and 3 pm, there will be a carnival-style celebration in the Surfside Beach Pier parking lot with a juggler, stilt walker, magician, games, cotton candy, popcorn, candy apples, hot dogs and a carousel.  A fireworks display will start at 9 pm and 50th Anniversary hats and shirts will be available for purchase.
Celebrations will start early May 4 with a “Blessing of the Beach” ceremony at 7 a.m. at the Surfside Beach Pier.  Then there will be music and a picnic at Passive Park from 1 pm to 3 pm

“Priscilla’s Posse: A simulated press conference about Gullah Heritage” recounts the historic visit in May 2005 of Thomalind Martin Polite (Priscilla’s descendant) of North Charleston to Sierra Leone, West Africa.  Through songs, lectures and photographs, Ronald Daise, Brookgreen’s Vice President for Creative Education explores the language, foods, crafts, rice production, and the Bunce Island Slave Castle.

"Kent Ullberg: A Retrospective"

This is a traveling retrospective exhibit of 48 pieces by Kent Ullberg, widely recognized as one of the world's leading wildlife sculptors.  The works give insight into Ullberg's sense of design and mechanics and also include smaller sculptures of unique and delicate beauty.  Pieces in the exhibition span from Owl (1969) to Archipenko’s Heron (2004), and include Wind in the Sails, a 1999 stainless steel sculpture that stands in Stockholm, Sweden.  The exhibit travels from the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Oradell, NJ.

World Famous Blue Crab Festival

This is the 33nd year of the waterfront festival celebrating cultural heritage of a fishing village. Recognized as the “Best Festival on the Grand Strand” by Sun News newspaper.  The Blue Crab Festival is one of the largest festivals in the Southeast with attendance of more than 50,000.   The festival will feature approximately 200 fine arts and crafts vendors, specialty food vendors, tremendous entertainment and a phenomenal children's area.  Click here for a list of where you can buy advance tickets.

Vennie Deas Moore, photographer/documentarian, shares about a current archeological dig on Hampton Plantation, “Descendants’ Voices of the Santee Delta.”  Lecture is in the Lowcountry Center Auditorium and is free with garden admission.

City of Myrtle Beach Memorial Day Parade and Festivities

Celebrate military men and women – active duty, reserves and National Guard – and veterans from every branch of the service.  See the Vietnam Memorial Wall, along with concerts, special events and family activities, plus a big parade on Saturday.  A traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall returns to Myrtle Beach, May 14-18, and will be on display near Crabtree Memorial Gymnasium at Grand Park.  The big Ocean Boulevard Memorial Day Parade steps off at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 24, with Grand Marshal Montel Williams.  This well-known talk show host spent 15 years in the military, where he discovered his public speaking talents, then went on to a national television career.   After the parade May 24, join us for a Family Picnic on the Pavilion site, complete with activities for the kids, military exhibits, music and more.  Headlining the afternoon is a performance by the Andrew Thielen Big Band and a chance to meet the Grand Marshal Montel Williams!

Red, White, and Blue Salute to Veterans

Brookgreen staff and volunteers will place flags throughout the gardens at patriotic sculpture and sculpture created by veterans.  Printed information about these artists and their work is available at the Welcome Center.
