The South's Grandest Christmas Show instills the true meaning of Christmas in your family with its combination of traditional Christmas classics and contemporary holiday favorites.  The South's Grandest Christmas Show is a southern family tradition on the Grand Strand with visitors and locals returning year after year.  Also featured in this year's show is comedian Ricky Mokel, who always puts a new twist on the Christmas season.  So, if you want to celebrate Christmas with an evening filled with song, dance and laughter, the Alabama Theatre is the place you want to be with your family and friends.

The Dickens Christmas Show is a unique national award winning event comprised of a multitude of shopping and entertainment options for individuals and groups alike. The cornerstone of the event is a Victorian Holiday Marketplace held in the 100,000 sq. ft. exhibit hall of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  Here, against a Victorian Holiday background, you will find hundreds of period clad vendors selling everything from jewelry, gifts, toys, arts and crafts, gourmet foods, holiday décor and much more. There is something for everyone on your holiday list, but the fun doesn't stop there. Strolling Victorian Musicians, Tea Leaf Readers, Shadow Box Displays, a Life Sized Historic Santa through the Ages Exhibit and a real live Santa, each lend their own charm to the show.  Plus there are the elaborate Festival displays of Trees, Tables, Wreaths and the Festival of Worlds that add to the experience too!

Now in their 10th year of providing this holiday tradition to the Conway area.  The excitement starts Thursday night November 13th, 4:30-8:30 pm with a premier dining experience.  This event is the "go-to event" where patrons can sample some of the best restaurants of Conway and Horry County.  This affordable dining experience allows samples with pricing starting at only $1.00 each and a general admission of $5.00.  During the night meet friends, listen to live music and enjoy the "Event under the Tent" beside the historic Waccamaw River!

Saturday, November 15th, opening at 10 am you'll be treated to the beautiful Riverfront Park. This year they host the nationally acclaimed St. Nicholas BBQfest.  Enjoy a great day of fun, arts, crafts, food vendors, kids' activities, music, special entertainment and yes, some of the best BBQ for your palate.  The fully sanctioned South Carolina BBQ Association event, "The War between the States," provides bragging rights and huge cash awards for contestants from both North Carolina and South Carolina.  Who will you choose? The BBQ is available starting at 11:30 and served until it's gone.  A $10.00 wristband gives you 10 opportunities to sample the best!

30th Annual Intracoastal Christmas Regatta

Little River Inlet to Dock Holiday Marina

Each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the curtain rises on this spectacular maritime parade at the Little River Inlet at 5 pm and travels south, arriving at Dock Holidays Marina at 7 pm.  Gather your family and watch the parade as it passes various viewing areas along the waterway.  Remember to bring a new toy and drop it off at a collection point at any marina in Little River or North Myrtle Beach.  If the parade ends and you have not yet donated your toy, you can take it to Harbour Gate Marina.  With your donations of new, unwrapped toys and/or monetary offerings, you can help make sure that there is not a single child without a present to open on Christmas morning.

Come try La Belle Amie’s Island Fever Music Fest.  You’ll be surrounded by a beautiful vineyard, great wine and music.  Admission is reduced by $3 if you bring two canned/dry good food items for the area food bank.  Festival dates are subject to change.  Inclement weather may cause a last-minute postponement or cancellation, so check the website or call prior to coming out to the event.

The 22nd Annual Arts Festival & Pow Wow will be held Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd. They invite you to join them for this event. The gates will open at 11:00 am on both days. In Brookgreen Gardens' Fall season presentation,“Gullah Tings fa Tink Bout,”  Ron Daise, Vice President for Creative Education, will perform a concert of songs and readings from his CD of the same title.  Through a musical journey of rich imagery and evocative rhythms and instrumentation, viewers celebrate Gullah Geechee culture in the genres of traditional spiritual, blues, gospel stomp and clap, Gullah Geechee/West African pop, and a Gullah Geechee/West African/Caribbean blend.  Themes highlighted are African Diaspora; the common cultural connections of food ways, language, rice heritage, crafts, music; the tragedy of enslavement; the importance of family and the resilience of survival.  Programs in the Wall Lowcountry Center Auditorium are free with garden admission.

Nightmare in the Square Costume Contest & Party

The Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, always held on the third weekend in October, offers fun for the whole family.  The show will feature one of our nation's best wooden boat exhibits with more than 140 classic wooden boats displayed on land and water, a wooden boat building competition, children's model boat building, knot tying, maritime art and crafts, food and music.  A special attraction will be the Wooden Boat Challenge when teams of two race to build a rowing skiff within a 4-hour time limit and then test their boats for seaworthiness in a rowing relay on the Sampit River.

A Pirate's Life for Me-Fun Things to Do in Myrtle Beach for Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Hoist the Jolly Roger and prepare for Talk Like a Pirate Day!  It’s coming up on September 19 and how do you plan to celebrate this important holiday?  Of course you’ll talk like a pirate, but why stop there?  South Carolina has a rich pirate history so, naturally, you’ll find many pirate-themed activities in Myrtle Beach. At Pirate’s Voyage, every day is Talk Like a Pirate Day.  One of our favorite pirate-y things to do is see the Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show.  You’ll love the swashbuckling buccaneers who perform incredible acts of acrobatics and sword fighting and enjoy a hearty seafaring meal.

Shipwreck Island Golf –Test yourself against a variety of buccaneer challenges—mini golf style.  You’ll see shipwrecks, blood-thirsty sharks and luckily you won’t have to worry about walking the plank, just getting a hole in one.

Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf—Take a fantasy golf adventure into Never-Never Land. Play either of their two 18-hole courses, Hooks or Lost Boys. Beware of the roving pirates, animated crocodiles and secret caverns. You can even walk through a smoking 15 foot skull. Go ahead…the Captain dares you!

Krispy Kreme makes this holiday super sweet!

Krispy Kreme conjures a true pirate party.  They offer a free donut to anyone who saunters in talking like a pirate and they’ll give a dozen glazed donuts to anyone dressed head to toe in pirate garb (for more info on what counts as pirate garb, click here).  And lucky for you, it's only 3 miles from Plantation Resort.

Drunken Jacks-This Murrells Inlet restaurant not only serves up delicious food but also an exciting pirate legend.  In the early 1600s, Blackbeard stopped to drop off a load of hijacked rum on an island in Murrells Inlet.  The pirates buried most of the rum but enjoyed a raucus night of boozing before falling into a drunken stupor.  The next morning they set sail, completely forgetting about their old friend Jack, who was still sleeping off the night before.  By the time they remembered Jack, they were already caught in battle and had to run far out to sea.  It was 2 years before they could return to the island for their rum and their friend.  When they arrived, they found 32 empty casks of rum scattered along the beach before they found the bones of old Jack.  Hence the name “Drunken Jack.”  Come enjoy great food and be a part of legend.

Pirate Adventures—Board the pirate ship, Sea Gypsy, and get caught up in this real life adventure.  Be amazed as their crew taps into the wonder of a child’s imagination.  Your child will be painted with a curly mustache or with an anchor tattoo, dressed with a lucky treasure hunting vest and marched off to the ship. Once aboard, the young pirates will use a treasure map to find the sunken treasure and defeat Pirate Pete.  See their website here.

Some tips for talking like a pirate

Double up on adjectives: Try saying something like” I’ll be needin’ a sweet, delicious donut from Krispy Kreme”, or “I be sailin’ away on my great, grand ship.”

Say Arr:  You can pretty much insert “Arr” anywhere you want in your sentence and it’s good.  “Arr, ye be wantin’ a hole in one or you’ll taste the cat o’nine tails.”

Slur your words:  Pirates enjoyed their alcohol and they weren’t super persnickety about elocution.

Gesticulate (for us common folk - wave your arms around): Pirates were animated sorts of people.  You’ll want to emphasize what you’re saying with your hands.

Pirate Vocabulary

Scallywag: An insult; to call someone untrustworthy.

Avast: Used to tell someone they need to stop what they’re doing and have a look at what you’re showing them.

Ahoy: A way to get someone’s attention.  Essentially “hello.”

Jolly Roger: The skull and crossbones symbol for pirates.

Cat O' Nine Tails: The special whip used to punish pirates; so called because of the multiple cords on the whip (usually 9) to more effectively mark some poor pirate’s back.

Davy Jones' Locker: The bottom of the sea; based on legends relating to Davy Jones and how he rules the bottom of the sea.  Putting someone into Davy Jone’s Locker meant throwing them overboard to their death.

Lily-livered:  An insult calling someone a coward.  It comes from the old belief that the liver was related to courage and if it was lily-colored (or pale) then it lacked blood, thus the organ most associated with courage was not vitalized with the flow of blood, making them a coward.

Me Hearty: A word for fellow shipmates.

Sprogs: New pirates that had not yet been trained on the ship.

Shiver Me Timbers: This phrase shows surprise or fear usually in a mocking way.  When the seas were rough, it would shake the wooden support beams of the ship, or the timbers, which was usually quite shocking.   The timbers would also shiver as canon balls punched through the ship and threw deadly splinters everywhere.

“From the time you walk in the pro shop until the time you leave, the staff is very friendly and personable.  As an experienced golfer, the thing that impressed me the most was that the course is in incredible shape and how true their greens roll.  One of my favorite holes was the 4th hole.  This was the most beautiful, yet most challenging hole on the course.  From the tee box, you have to hit the ball straight through an opening of trees.  An accurate tee shot is demanded to score well on this hole, as the fairway is guarded on the right by water and left by tall pines. The water extends just short of the green, so make sure to select the best club so your ball doesn’t end up in the water.  This is a very well-maintained course with an exceptional staff and I would definitely come back and play here again. “
