South Carolina's Winter Wonderland: Brookgreen Gardens' Nights of a Thousand Candles

Brookgreen Gardens’ “Nights of a Thousand Candles”
December 2-3, 9-10, 15-17 From 3 to 10 p.m.

The beauty, artistry and magic of Brookgreen Gardens’ Nights of a Thousand Candles is a winter wonderland that will kindle your Christmas spirit and be a favorite memory for you and your family for years to come. The magic of the holiday season comes to life as 5,500 hand-lit candles illuminate garden paths and festive Christmas lights brighten dark, winter evenings. Stroll through more than 30 acres of the gardens with 10 unique garden areas. Candles aboard small floating barges drift lightly in the fountains and ponds that surround the sculptures, and white lights gently cling to the limbs of mossy oaks--all illuminating the gardens with the magic of the holiday season.

Included in the festival is an array of musical performances: local choral ensembles, hand-bell choirs and jazz groups play classical and current holiday favorites, along with a variety of musicians who meander the lighted paths.  To view the performance list, please click here.

In a spacious heated tent guests may enjoy a delicious buffet-style dinner catered by Inlet Affairs—associated with the well known restaurant, Drunken Jack's. Please click here for the menu and prices.

In the Huntington Sculpture Garden, the Old Kitchen serves light refreshments and beverages. Further beverages are available at the Time Warner Cable Entertainment Tent.

Tickets:
Adult tickets are $16, child tickets (ages 4-12) are $7 and children age 3 and younger are free. All ticket proceeds go to support Brookgreen Gardens, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, whose mission is to preserve and display American sculpture and regional plants, animals and history.
For group reservations of 15 guests or more, call 800-849-1931 or 843-235-6021.
Nights of a Thousand Candles is one of South Carolina’s premier holiday festivals, and has been named by Southeastern Tourism Society one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast. Now is your chance to come see why!  Happy Holidays!

Top 5 Reasons to visit Myrtle Beach this Holiday Season

Plantation Resort wants to let you in on a little secret: Myrtle Beach is just as exciting during the holidays as it is during the summers! Sure, you can’t jump into the ocean without a wetsuit, and maybe your favorite putt-putt course is closed for the season, but there’s dozens of other ways to enjoy the mild winter weather and join in the festive celebrations.

In order to introduce you to our favorite seasonal events, I’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 Ways to Kick Off the Holiday Season. Here they are, in no particular order:

1. “Christmas on Ice” at the Palace Theater
November 1 – December 30

Start Christmas off in style with a show chock-full of championship ice skaters, the best high-kicking dancers this side of New York, and your favorite Christmas songs sung by the best of Broadway and London’s West End. This show is complete with a 40-foot ice skating rink, and a massive winter wonderland stage. There is no other show like this in Myrtle Beach, and don’t forget…we have your discounted tickets waiting for you at the Plantation Resort front desk!

2. 30th Annual Dickens Christmas Show and Festivals Week
November 10 – 12 From 9 am – 6 pm; November 13 From 12 noon – 6 pm

This national award-winning event provides a magical, holiday shopping experience for the whole family. Inspired by Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", step back in time to an elaborate 19th century holiday marketplace where you stroll through the aisles featuring 350 period-clad vendors offering everything from fine arts, crafts and imported gifts to food, clothing and Christmas décor. Experience live Punch and Judy Shows, strolling minstrels and even jolly old’ Saint Nick himself! This event is a local favorite that will be sure to put even the biggest "grinch"  into the holiday spirit. For more information call 800-261-5991.

3. 8th Annual Murrells Inlet Oyster Roast
Saturday, November 19 From 11:30 am - 3:30 pm

Calling all oyster-lovers! Claim your seat at the all-you-can-eat afternoon feast of steamed oysters, and you can bet...you will get your fill of oysters that afternoon. Enjoy the beautiful waterway while enjoying seafood, fun and entertainment. A menu of other food items (burgers, dogs, chowder and more), beer and soda are sold separately. Free admission to the event, with lots of entertainment to enjoy! Bring an oyster knife or buy one at the roast.  Call 843-357-2007 for more information.

4. Holiday Tree Lighting at Broadway at the Beach
Saturday, November 19 From 6 – 7 pm

What better way to ring in the holiday season than a trip to exciting Broadway at the Beach and the festive tree lighting at Celebrity Square! The allure of the season is beautifully displayed as bright green garland, soft shimmering lights and Christmas trees dot the walkways. Classic and contemporary Christmas music fills the air, and the excitement of the holidays is brought to life for everyone to enjoy! Make sure to check out the local boutiques - a great way to start your Christmas shopping - or dine at the many restaurants close by. At the very least, we recommend stopping by The Fudgery to smell the delicious chocolate while sipping a warm cup of coffee. Tis the season!

5. The Carolina Opry Christmas Special
November  1- January 2, 2012

A holiday tradition for over 25 years – making this the longest running holiday special in Myrtle Beach – this thrilling show brings to life the spirit of Christmas through music, dance and comedy.  The Carolina Opry has won just about every major award in South Carolina, and their holiday special lives up to the theatre’s reputation. The exciting new changes for this year include award-winning costumes and special effects that take this show to a new level. This family-friendly show is guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit and leave you yearning for more. Don't Forget to Turn Your Clocks Back - Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday, November 6th

Don't forget to turn back the clock on Saturday night!
This year, Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2:00am. So before going to sleep on Saturday, make sure and set your clock back an hour.

Because we fall back and get an extra hour of sleep, most people consider Daylight Savings Time a holiday. And why not? An extra hour to stay in bed is always a good reason to celebrate!

Fall Back 2011, Spring Forward 2012
We move the clock forward in the spring (losing one hour of sleep) when Daylight Savings Time (DST) starts. The clock falls back one hour when DST ends in the fall where we gain an extra hour of sleep. I always remember which way to adjust the clock by keeping in mind the saying: “spring forward, fall back.”

The Holiday Season is Approaching
The end of Daylight Savings Time reminds me that the holiday season is just around the corner.  I better get busy making my list.  Great things are happening this holiday season in Myrtle Beach and at Plantation Resort.  Stay tuned for more information.  And please come visit!  With the extra hour of sleep this weekend, we'll be awake, rested and ready to make your vacation a merry one!

Continuing Improvements at Plantation Resort

If you haven't been back to Plantation Resort lately, we know you'll be pleasantly surprised. One comment from an owner who hadn't been back for many years summed it up best by saying, "Wow!  You've been busy!"

We've kept you updated as we undertook a multi-year re-landscaping project in front of the buildings, in between parking lots and along the roadside on Double Eagle Drive. We've replaced the older, overgrown landscaping  with lush grasses, blooming flowers and our signature palmetto trees - creating the allure of a tropical paradise for your vacation destination.  As 2011 comes to a close, we are pleased to announce that this project will be completed with the re-landscaping of buildings 210 and 218.

Now, the old bushes and trees have been replaced with the perfect balance of palm trees and foliage. We’re excited to show off our new renovations, and we hope you agree with us – it has been well worth the effort!

But the renovations don’t stop there.   With the inclusion of building 214’s new vinyl siding, another multi-year project comes to an exciting close. New vinyl siding on all the buildings saves money on maintenance (e.g. painting, replacing wood, etc); improves the gutter systems, which are replaced during the process; and increases the over-all appearance of buildings.

At the outdoor pool, we’ve “gone green” while increasing the efficiency of our pool systems. Our new, environmentally-friendly filtration system makes it easier for us to keep the water clean, uses less energy and reduces the amount of pool chemicals. Right across the street at the Lazy River, we've installed computerized pool pumps. This newly installed system allows us to reduce the amount of electricity by two-thirds.

With these improvements, we are truly doing our best to make Plantation Resort your "home away from home."  Please come and enjoy these improvements as we continually strive to make your vacation experience even better!

Premier Owner and Guest Weekend Getaway

Are you thinking about joining us for a weekend getaway? My name is Ashley, an employee at the resort, and I was lucky enough to join Plantation Resort’s very first Owner and Guest Weekend Getaway in September.  It was definitely a weekend to remember where you'll get to experience Plantation Resort like never before!

Because the stay was over a weekend, it meant the trip was short enough to leave the kids at home and time off work wasn’t an issue. In other words, this was a perfect opportunity for couples to have a fun, romantic weekend, and to see all the exciting changes that have taken place at Plantation Resort.  Even better, owners were able to invite their friends along with them to join in the experience.

The weekend opened with a wine and cheese mixer for all Plantation Resort VIP owners and their friends. As John Robinson, owner and participant, reported, “It was really wonderful getting together with other owners and just having fun.”

A fabulous dinner at Damon’s Oceanfront Grill followed the mixer, then on to the Landshark – a Jimmy Buffett bar and grill – for drinks and a ride on the newest Myrtle Beach attraction, the Sky Wheel.  This Ferris wheel-inspired ride is bigger - an impressive 200 feet high offering spectacular views of the coastline, safer and more fun than your typical state fair voyage. In fact, Myrtle Beach is home to the only Sky Wheel in the United States – a definite must see!

On Saturday morning, VIPs were treated to Plantation Resort’s buffet breakfast served poolside at the outdoor pool followed by a relaxing tour and review of the Resort and all it now offers. Saturday night the fun continued with an exciting excursion on the Aquasino Sun Cruz Casino cruise line! The VIPs and I  boarded the impressive 220 ft. liner just as the sun was sinking below the stunningly beautiful waterway before making our way to the ocean. The cruise ship provided an impressive dinner buffet including all you can eat chicken, prime rib, shrimp stir-fry and delicious cake for dessert. It also boasts three levels of gaming fun and live entertainment on the upper deck. One of our owners won big on the slots. She told us, “Even if we didn’t win anything we still would have had a great time…but we won!”

Sunday morning, the event concluded with a continental breakfast and VIP late check-out: an opportunity to sleep in and enjoy breakfast again poolside.

So what are you waiting for?  Another event is being planned now and Plantation Resort can’t wait to give back to our VIP owners. Come on down and let us take you out for the weekend…Carolina style!

Contact us today at 888-210-1241 to attend a future VIP owner and referral weekend event.  Invite your friends, call the sitter, pack the suitcase and leave all the planning to us!

Hope to see you soon!

Ditch the Workout, Join the Party!

It's official...the Zumba Craze has hit Plantation Resort!
Complimentary classes are now being taught every Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. in the aerobics room at the indoor pool.

Skye Robbins with her class on Wednesday

Zumba is an exhilarating exercise experience that almost makes you forget you’re working out. Once you start moving your hips to the cha cha, salsa, reggaeton, rumba and samba, you’ll feel like you’ve joined a party, not a fitness class. Best of all, you don’t need any previous dance experience and it’s absolutely free to all our guests and owners!

This new dance-inspired workout fuses energetic Latin beats with easy-to-follow dance moves that combine for a unique, one-of-a-kind fitness routine.  This one hour class features interval strength training with a mix of rhythms, along with resistance training to tone and sculpt the body – all flavored with a Latin twist.

Zumba is definitely infectious. I loved the energy, music and easiness of the dance moves. At first, I’ll admit I was a little nervous. Sometimes my hips just don’t move the way they should. But the teacher instantly made me feel at ease, and the dance moves were repeated often enough for me to catch on. Before long, I felt comfortable enough to add my own style to the routine. The hour passed faster than I had anticipated. I can’t wait to go again…and again!

The internationally popular Zumba is nothing short of revolutionary. It’s spreading like wildfire, and it’s one of the most influential new fitness programs worldwide. Zumba enthusiasts claim an astonishing 10 million participants every week.

So make sure to bring your family and friends along with you to join the Zumba fitness party at Plantation Resort!

Want to find out more about the health benefits of Zumba? Ditch the workout, join the party.

Hear the Rumble... Bikers are coming to the Beach starting this weekend May 13th!

2011 Grand Strand Spring Rally starts this weekend May 13th to 22nd and Atlantic Beach Bike Fest is coming May 27th to 30th.

The 2011 Spring Rally is on! This year's event will be held May 13th to the 22nd, 2011. Even though the city of Myrtle Beach is no longer sponsoring the event, the rest of the Grand Strand including Plantation Resort is ready to welcome you!

This rally, formerly known as the "Myrtle Beach Bike Week," "Crusin' the Coast" or "Myrtle Beach Spring Rally" is now being billed as "The Grand Strand Bike Rally". Approximately 300,000 people make their way to the rally for this 10-day event. The festivities include motorcycle racing, vendors, concerts and parties. The event contends with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as one of the most popular motorcycle venues in the United States.

The rumors of the death of the Biker Weeks in Myrtle Beach are unfounded. The helmet law passed by the city of Myrtle Beach was overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. So like you see exclaimed on many biker websites: “The Beach is back!”

Atlantic Beach Bike Fest, also known as "Black Bike Week," begins May 27th and runs through Memorial Day weekend to the 30th. It is the largest rocket bike festivial bringing thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Grand Strand area for events, parties and fun.

So come to the Grand Strand, enjoy all the wonderful attractions and great riding on the coastline of SC and NC and have a great time just like times past.

If you need a place to stay, Plantation Resort has condos still available with very competitive rates and are closer than ever to all the action that is found on the south end of the Grand Strand in Murrells Inlet, just a few minutes away. Also, for those who want to bypass Myrtle Beach to reach the events on the north end of the Grand Strand, Plantation Resort’s location makes it easy to access Highway 31 which will take you to North Myrtle Beach’s and Atlantic Beach’s events and beyond into North Carolina.

So come stay with us and bring your bikes. The sun is out, the weather is warm, time to ride!

More Improvements - Working Diligently to Make the Resort a Better Place to Vacation!

We've been at it again!  While you have been snowed in dreaming of white sandy beaches, blue skies, palm trees and maybe a round of golf or two, we've been busy working to improve Plantation Resort in preparation for your long needed and well deserved vacation.

Replastering the Outdoor Pool
We have renovated the Lazy River, Kiddie Pool (zero entry), Hot Tub and Outdoor Pool by replastering the bottoms and re-tiling all the steps and entrances.  So be prepared to get wet as these amenities will be practically brand new when you get here!

Many of you have commented on how pleased you've been with the landscaping.  We continue to make the Resort more lush, green and tropically colorful by planting over 50 more palm trees around the Resort.  In addition, we've planted thousands of flowers and have put down over 40,000 sq. yards of new sod that will be grown in and ready to greet you when you arrive.

New Sea Wall and Palms
We've added more seawalls to stop soil erosion into the waterways and to provide more grassy areas behind buildings 206, 208 and 218 where you can play, catch some rays or barbecue.

And those of you who will be checking in to a condo on Double Eagle Drive will notice improvements to the foyer areas with new carpeting, trim, decor and paint.
So please come enjoy the new improvements!  Hope to see you soon at Plantation Resort!

My Surfing Lesson Experience

As I balanced on a surfboard waiting for my turn to try and ride a wave my mind thought back over the events of the day...

Meeting at the outdoor pool, the shuttle bus ride out to the beach, getting to know the others that would be in my surfing class for the day, picking a board and practicing everything on the beach that I'd need to know in the water had all lead up to this moment. I had already tried to ride a few waves, mostly ending in disaster and a mouth full of seawater, but I felt good about this one. I could taste the salt in the air and the feel the breeze pushing me forward. This was my wave, or so said my instructor.

An instructor that was a few yards away with a group of three yelled out, “Party wave! Everyone gets up!” Watching as the wave got closer I knew that this time I was ready for it. As the wave began to swell my instructor pushed the back of my board into it. Having been told enough times before this wave when to try and stand I knew the feeling I was looking for now, and I found it. Jumping up I found my feet. For a few moments I stood on that board and knew I had done it. I had surfed for the first time!

As I paddled back out into the water, I looked up and down our little piece of beach and saw my classmates getting ready for the next wave. As I watched them I knew this was the best morning on the beach I had ever had.
Come "hang ten" with us!  Lessons offered through Plantation Resort all during the summer.  Boards and transportation to and from the beach are included.  Groups are limited, advanced reservations strongly encouraged.  Contact us by calling 1-800-845-5039 to reserve your board and your chance to catch a wave!

The Largest Ferris Wheel in the Eastern US is Coming to Myrtle Beach!

With the warmth of the sun caressing your cheek and the smell of saltwater filling the air, you step into your SkyWheel carriage and prepare for the journey up, up and away into the brilliant blue sky. You instinctively seek the hand of a parent, sibling, best friend or sweetheart as you rise and fall over the beach’s golden sand. The scenic view of the sun sparkling on the water invites a smile upon your face as you notice a school of playful dolphins skipping through the waves in the seemingly endless horizon. The joyful memory of this experience will stay with you forever. Take it all in.

Myrtle Beach's boardwalk is welcoming a brand new Ferris wheel attraction - the SkyWheel Myrtle Beach. For several weeks, construction crews have been hard at work to meet its scheduled May 2011 grand opening, aligned with the opening of Jimmy Buffett’s Land Shark Bar and Grill. This Swiss-designed and -manufactured structure, will stand 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean. The SkyWheel will not only be the largest wheel of any kind east of the Mississippi River, but it will also be the first observation wheel of its kind in the United States and only the second in North America. During rides that will last ten to twelve minutes, up to six passengers ride in one of 42 climate-controlled, enclosed gondolas with non-reflective glass coverings to ensure the best possible photos and videos of the beautiful panoramic views. One designated VIP carriage will even have a glass floor and leather bucket seating for an even more enhanced experience! In addition, the SkyWheel Myrtle Beach is equipped with a state-of-the-art computer-generated lighting system that features more than one million LED lights. With several magical light shows taking place every evening after sunset, it is sure to be an unforgettable sight and experience for you and the entire family.

Because the views from the SkyWheel promise to be unlike any that you’ve ever seen at the beach, be sure to schedule a ride during your family’s next vacation to Myrtle Beach!

Kiss the Cook! Hot Breakfast Served with Love at Plantation Resort

For the past four years, Ms. Sandra has whipped up breakfast at Plantation Resort in Surfside Beach. Five mornings a week, she fries the bacon and sausage, scrambles the eggs and prepares the fluffiest pancakes on the Grand Strand. The most popular dish, you ask? Ms. Sandra’s signature “Dirty Eggs” is her favorite to make and our favorite to eat. This ingenious concoction combines scrambled eggs, perfectly-cooked hash browns, savory sausage and bacon, sweet onions, sizzling green peppers, and melted cheese in a delicious dish, bringing guests back for more than just seconds without shame.

Born and raised in Myrtle Beach, Ms. Sandra knows this coastline like the back of her hand. In addition to raising two fine children and now enjoying two wonderful grandchildren, Sandra made a career for herself in the restaurant and hospitality business alongside the love of her life, her late husband Jack. For 35 years, Sandra has been doing what she loves best. “My favorite part about cooking is putting smiles on the faces of family and friends. And everyone around here is family and friends,” she says with her sweet southern accent. She talks about food, life and her beloved grand kids while she cooks and moves back and forth between the stove top, grill and countertop in her kitchen, and we love listening to the stories she tells. Ms. Sandra’s bright view on life and its lessons, lulls you into feeling that you're right at home like a long time friend or part of the family.

Plantation Resort’s breakfast begins on President’s Day - Monday, February 21st.  You and your family can start your morning off right by enjoying some of Ms. Sandra’s delicious fixins' in the Activity Center for only $5.88 per person ($6.50 with tax) Monday through Friday 8am to 10am.

As Ms. Sandra says, “The South knows how to cook and knows how to eat. My grandmother always told me breakfast was the most important meal of the day.” Wake up to breakfast at Plantation Resort and enjoy some true southern hospitality by saying good morning to Ms. Sandra!
