Golf Season Has Arrived! We Welcome East Coast Golf Management to Myrtle Beach!

Myrtle Beach's beautifully mild temperatures at this time of year mean many of you will soon be lacing up your golf shoes, dusting off your clubs, and taking a trip out onto the green. We know how important the golf season is to many of our owners and guests, and we work hard to always bring you the latest information on the selection of discounted courses offered at Plantation Resort.

Signature Golf Group, Plantation Resort’s long-time golf partner, has disbanded and two former company executives have created a new golf course management and marketing company named East Coast Golf. The 12 courses affiliated with East Coast Golf include several of the courses Plantation Resort offers at discounted prices, and this will not change despite new management. We are excited to be working with East Coast Golf as they help us expand the number of discounted courses offered to our owners.

The newly renovated Heron Point is a course managed by East Coast Golf, and the newest addition to the array of discounted golf options offered at Plantation Resort. Rated by Golf Magazine as the No. 1 “best bang for your buck” course in Myrtle Beach, Heron Point is the new “birdie” in town with plenty of water, bunkers and narrow fairways.

In addition to Heron Point, courses offered include Indigo Creek, the Conway Country Club, Azalea Sands and River Oaks.

We’ve partnered with Tupelo Bay for those looking to play an executive course or at night on their lighted fairways.

Play 18 holes at any of these courses for the exceptional rate of $25 a round plus tax, and this even includes a cart!

Another Seawall Completed at Plantation Resort

Maintenance crews have been hard at work constructing new seawalls in an effort to protect land erosion from the ponds flowing through the beautiful landscape at Plantation Resort. Last November, the seawall project began behind buildings 215, 217 and 219. The picture on the left depicts the extent of the erosion.

We're happy to announce this section of the seawall has been completed! The photo below illustrates the new sea wall – free of erosion – behind 215, 217 and 219. As soon as the new sod is placed, construction will begin on a new seawall behind building 214 which is expected to begin this month. These seawall construction projects are a proactive, cost-effective approach to protecting property and maintaining grounds.

These projects are only a few on a long list of improvements that have been planned for the resort. Months of preparation, planning and teamwork go into these updates. The end result is to provide an oasis where owners and guests may come to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery at Plantation Resort. So please come and take advantage of these new improvements!

Dinner at Damons

Last October’s Owner and Guest Weekend Getaway was particularly special because it fostered a relaxing yet exciting atmosphere where many new friendships were made. In fact, several participants who met over the weekend planned to take future vacations to Plantation Resort together! What began as a weekend trip turned into an event filled with new friends and lasting memories for everyone who attended.

On the first day, participants checked in while enjoying wine, hors d'oeuvres and lively conversation as participants were introduced to one another. The weather was a beautiful 77 degrees and several mentioned they were leaving to take a romantic walk along the beach. Others were excited about taking a dip in the heated outdoor pool.

Later that evening, owners and guests boarded the Plantation Resort shuttles where they were whisked away to a fabulous dinner at the oceanfront restaurant, Damon’s Grill. Participants were given a choice of the finest entrees on the menu: steak with seafood, barbecue ribs with crab cakes or select cuts of prime rib. Owners were seated in a private room and had personal attention from servers, bartenders and Plantation Resort staff. Following dinner the fun continued on the oceanfront boardwalk with drinks at the Landshark – a new Jimmy Buffett bar and grill – and a ride on the newest Myrtle Beach attraction, the Sky Wheel. This 200 feet high observation wheel is the first of its kind in the United States and a definite must ride!

Saturday morning, owners were treated to our famous breakfast buffet served next to the outdoor pool. Following breakfast, guests were given tours to familiarize them with the latest upgrades and improvements at Plantation Resort and to inform them of their options as timeshare owners.

Saturday evening, friends and owners were reunited to experience the most talked about show in Myrtle Beach – Dolly Parton's Pirate’s Voyage. This swashbuckling adventure is fit for the whole family and includes a delicious pirate feast! Sitting down to a four-course meal, we cheered on our pirate crew as they fought on land, water and air for victory. After the show, owners and guests boarded the shuttles with grins on their faces as they talked about the loveable sea lions and the incredible stunts of the pirate crews. The enthusiasm over the show filled the air and left a jubilant spirit among the party. It was a fitting end to a wonderful day and a fantastic evening.

Sunday morning, as the participants enjoyed a continental breakfast, Camilla Ferry told us, “It was good getting together, going to the venues, and meeting [new] people. A lot of times when you come here you’re on vacation with your family and you don’t get to meet a lot of different people...[we] liked that, and overall the weekend was just wonderful.”

Don't Forget to Turn Your Clocks Back - Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday, November 6th

Don't forget to turn back the clock on Saturday night!
This year, Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 2:00am. So before going to sleep on Saturday, make sure and set your clock back an hour.

Because we fall back and get an extra hour of sleep, most people consider Daylight Savings Time a holiday. And why not? An extra hour to stay in bed is always a good reason to celebrate!

Fall Back 2011, Spring Forward 2012
We move the clock forward in the spring (losing one hour of sleep) when Daylight Savings Time (DST) starts. The clock falls back one hour when DST ends in the fall where we gain an extra hour of sleep. I always remember which way to adjust the clock by keeping in mind the saying: “spring forward, fall back.”

The Holiday Season is Approaching
The end of Daylight Savings Time reminds me that the holiday season is just around the corner. I better get busy making my list. Great things are happening this holiday season in Myrtle Beach and at Plantation Resort. Stay tuned for more information. And please come visit! Continuing Improvements at Plantation Resort

If you haven't been back to Plantation Resort lately, we know you'll be pleasantly surprised. One comment from an owner who hadn't been back for many years summed it up best by saying, "Wow! You've been busy!"

We've kept you updated as we undertook a multi-year re-landscaping project in front of the buildings, in between parking lots and along the roadside on Double Eagle Drive. We've replaced the older, overgrown landscaping with lush grasses, blooming flowers and our signature palmetto trees - creating the allure of a tropical paradise for your vacation destination. As 2011 comes to a close, we are pleased to announce that this project will be completed with the re-landscaping of buildings 210 and 218.

Now, the old bushes and trees have been replaced with the perfect balance of palm trees and foliage. We’re excited to show off our new renovations, and we hope you agree with us – it has been well worth the effort!

But the renovations don’t stop there. With the inclusion of building 214’s new vinyl siding, another multi-year project comes to an exciting close. New vinyl siding on all the buildings saves money on maintenance (e.g. painting, replacing wood, etc); improves the gutter systems, which are replaced during the process; and increases the over-all appearance of buildings.

At the outdoor pool, we’ve “gone green” while increasing the efficiency of our pool systems. Our new, environmentally-friendly filtration system makes it easier for us to keep the water clean, uses less energy and reduces the amount of pool chemicals. Right across the street at the Lazy River, we've installed computerized pool pumps. This newly installed system allows us to reduce the amount of electricity by two-thirds.

With these improvements, we are truly doing our best to make Plantation Resort your "home away from home." Please come and enjoy these improvements as we continually strive to make your vacation experience even better!

Premier Owner and Guest Weekend Getaway

Are you thinking about joining us for a weekend getaway? My name is Ashley, an employee at the resort, and I was lucky enough to join Plantation Resort’s very first Owner and Guest Weekend Getaway in September. It was definitely a weekend to remember where you'll get to experience Plantation Resort like never before!

Because the stay was over a weekend, it meant the trip was short enough to leave the kids at home and time off work wasn’t an issue. In other words, this was a perfect opportunity for couples to have a fun, romantic weekend, and to see all the exciting changes that have taken place at Plantation Resort. Even better, owners were able to invite their friends along with them to join in the experience.

The weekend opened with a wine and cheese mixer for all Plantation Resort VIP owners and their friends. As John Robinson, owner and participant, reported, “It was really wonderful getting together with other owners and just having fun.”

A fabulous dinner at Damon’s Oceanfront Grill followed the mixer, then on to the Landshark – a Jimmy Buffett bar and grill – for drinks and a ride on the newest Myrtle Beach attraction, the Sky Wheel. This Ferris wheel-inspired ride is bigger - an impressive 200 feet high offering spectacular views of the coastline, safer and more fun than your typical state fair voyage. In fact, Myrtle Beach is home to the only Sky Wheel in the United States – a definite must see!

On Saturday morning, VIPs were treated to Plantation Resort’s buffet breakfast served poolside at the outdoor pool followed by a relaxing tour and review of the Resort and all it now offers. Saturday night the fun continued with an exciting excursion on the Aquasino Sun Cruz Casino cruise line! The VIPs and I boarded the impressive 220 ft. liner just as the sun was sinking below the stunningly beautiful waterway before making our way to the ocean. The cruise ship provided an impressive dinner buffet including all you can eat chicken, prime rib, shrimp stir-fry and delicious cake for dessert. It also boasts three levels of gaming fun and live entertainment on the upper deck. One of our owners won big on the slots. She told us, “Even if we didn’t win anything we still would have had a great time…but we won!”

Sunday morning, the event concluded with a continental breakfast and VIP late check-out: an opportunity to sleep in and enjoy breakfast again poolside.

2011 Grand Strand Spring Rally starts this weekend May 13th to 22nd and Atlantic Beach Bike Fest is coming May 27th to 30th.

The 2011 Spring Rally is on! This year's event will be held May 13th to the 22nd, 2011. Even though the city of Myrtle Beach is no longer sponsoring the event, the rest of the Grand Strand including Plantation Resort is ready to welcome you!

This rally, formerly known as the "Myrtle Beach Bike Week," "Crusin' the Coast" or "Myrtle Beach Spring Rally" is now being billed as "The Grand Strand Bike Rally". Approximately 300,000 people make their way to the rally for this 10-day event. The festivities include motorcycle racing, vendors, concerts and parties. The event contends with the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as one of the most popular motorcycle venues in the United States.

The rumors of the death of the Biker Weeks in Myrtle Beach are unfounded. The helmet law passed by the city of Myrtle Beach was overturned by the South Carolina Supreme Court. So like you see exclaimed on many biker websites: “The Beach is back!”

Atlantic Beach Bike Fest, also known as "Black Bike Week," begins May 27th and runs through Memorial Day weekend to the 30th. It is the largest rocket bike festivial bringing thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Grand Strand area for events, parties and fun.

So come to the Grand Strand, enjoy all the wonderful attractions and great riding on the coastline of SC and NC and have a great time just like times past.

More Improvements - Working Diligently to Make the Resort a Better Place to Vacation!

We've been at it again! While you have been snowed in dreaming of white sandy beaches, blue skies, palm trees and maybe a round of golf or two, we've been busy working to improve Plantation Resort in preparation for your long needed and well deserved vacation.

Replastering the Outdoor Pool

We have renovated the Lazy River, Kiddie Pool (zero entry), Hot Tub and Outdoor Pool by replastering the bottoms and re-tiling all the steps and entrances. So be prepared to get wet as these amenities will be practically brand new when you get here!

Many of you have commented on how pleased you've been with the landscaping. We continue to make the Resort more lush, green and tropically colorful by planting over 50 more palm trees around the Resort. In addition, we've planted thousands of flowers and have put down over 40,000 sq. yards of new sod that will be grown in and ready to greet you when you arrive.

New Sea Wall and Palms

We've added more seawalls to stop soil erosion into the waterways and to provide more grassy areas behind buildings 206, 208 and 218 where you can play, catch some rays or barbecue.

And those of you who will be checking in to a condo on Double Eagle Drive will notice improvements to the foyer areas with new carpeting, trim, decor and paint.

My Surfing Lesson Experience

As I balanced on a surfboard waiting for my turn to try and ride a wave my mind thought back over the events of the day...

Meeting at the outdoor pool, the shuttle bus ride out to the beach, getting to know the others that would be in my surfing class for the day, picking a board and practicing everything on the beach that I'd need to know in the water had all lead up to this moment. I had already tried to ride a few waves, mostly ending in disaster and a mouth full of seawater, but I felt good about this one. I could taste the salt in the air and the feel the breeze pushing me forward. This was my wave, or so said my instructor.

An instructor that was a few yards away with a group of three yelled out, “Party wave! Everyone gets up!” Watching as the wave got closer I knew that this time I was ready for it. As the wave began to swell my instructor pushed the back of my board into it. Having been told enough times before this wave when to try and stand I knew the feeling I was looking for now, and I found it. Jumping up I found my feet. For a few moments I stood on that board and knew I had done it. I had surfed for the first time!

As I paddled back out into the water, I looked up and down our little piece of beach and saw my classmates getting ready for the next wave. As I watched them I knew this was the best morning on the beach I had ever had.

For the past four years, Ms. Sandra has whipped up breakfast at Plantation Resort in Surfside Beach. Five mornings a week, she fries the bacon and sausage, scrambles the eggs and prepares the fluffiest pancakes on the Grand Strand. The most popular dish, you ask? Ms. Sandra’s signature “Dirty Eggs” is her favorite to make and our favorite to eat. This ingenious concoction combines scrambled eggs, perfectly-cooked hash browns, savory sausage and bacon, sweet onions, sizzling green peppers, and melted cheese in a delicious dish, bringing guests back for more than just seconds without shame.

Born and raised in Myrtle Beach, Ms. Sandra knows this coastline like the back of her hand. In addition to raising two fine children and now enjoying two wonderful grandchildren, Sandra made a career for herself in the restaurant and hospitality business alongside the love of her life, her late husband Jack. Myrtle Beach Marathon Weekend February 17th -19th!

Since 1998, the BI-LO Myrtle Beach Marathon has assisted the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Carolina and the Horry County Chapter of the American Red Cross with raising almost $3 million in charitable contributions! The Myrtle Beach Marathon and its weekend of events include the Myrtle Beach BI-LO Marathon, Dasani Half Marathon, RBC Bank 5K and Ripley’s One Mile Family Fun Run and the House of Blues Post Race Party.

RCI Reveals What Happens Behind the Curtain to Determine Trading Power

“Oh no, not again!” “ RCI has made changes to my Weeks program that I simply DO NOT understand. Am I alone here or are there others out there as confused as me? Please help!”

We’ve heard from many of you, our Weeks owners, who have asked for help understanding the changes that RCI has made to the Weeks program recently through what RCI is calling the Enhanced Weeks Program. The good news is that very little has changed. Your trading power has not changed in any way. RCI has simply given us a glimpse into the way they have always calculated trading power and how they value a deposited week. (If you are not an RCI Weeks member or do not currently participate in the Weeks exchange program, this article does not pertain to you. But if you’re curious, please read on.)

We’re going to outline the “need to know” here: Nothing has changed in the way RCI calculates your trading power; it’s simply unveiling how RCI comes up with the value of your exchange. RCI assigns the value of the week you deposit with a number they all “Trading Power”. This number can range from 1 to 60 where 60 represents a week with the maximum trading power possible.

Here is something new! You can search for a vacation by “Trading Power,” making it even easier to compare resorts and to book the vacation you want and more importantly you can attain! For example, if you have a trading power of 48, you know that you can make a reservation for any resort with a trading power of 48 or lower.

Here’s an additional new benefit! You can combine your leftover trading power with leftovers from previous exchanges or current deposits to where you can accumulate enough for another vacation!

How can you increase your trading power? You can positively affect your trading power by paying close attention to the timeliness of your deposit. The earlier you deposit the more trading power you’ll earn for your trade. Log-on to RCI.com to monitor your account and be your very own vacation guide.

So why did RCI implement this new program? And how does it really benefit me? Here is what others are saying about RCI's new Enhanced Weeks Program:

RCI Starts to Implement Settlement Terms of a Lawsuit Through Implementing the Enhanced Weeks Program

At the same time that RCI’s attorneys notified other counsel and Time Sharing Today’s publisher about the progress of RCI’s compliance with the class action settlement agreement, RCI appears to have moved beyond its obligations in rolling out a new trading power initiative.

While the settlement only required RCI to respond to a member’s request about the trading power of that member’s week and available inventory for which the member’s deposited week had sufficient trading power, RCI is now letting its members use the trading power information to provide more flexibility in making exchanges and trading up to highly demanded weeks.

Resort weeks will reportedly be rated with trading power ranging from 1 to 60. Trading power ratings of several deposited weeks can be combined to trade up to a week with a trading power higher than any one of the member’s week. If a member exchanges into a week with lower trading power, the member’s account will be credited with “excess” trading power and combined with a subsequent deposit’s trading power to determine the trading power available for the member to use.

RCI began educating members on these new developments on RCI.com and in the October edition of its Endless Vacation magazine, explaining how trading power transparency, deposit credits and combing deposited weeks will greatly assist them in their future vacation planning and provide them with more choice, flexibility and value in their future vacation planning. RCI will provide further information to its members throughout the next few months to help ensure confidence with the new enhancements and highlight the benefits to members worldwide.

“In the increasingly transparent online vacation planning world that we live in, this something our members have been consistently asking for. It’s one of the most exciting things we’ve ever done for our members – it’s really unprecedented,” said Geoff Ballotti, CEO, RCI. “Transparency is important because people want to have more control over how they trade their timeshare vacation for another vacation they’d like to take.

Compliance with another significant part of the settlement agreement – deposited weeks being held exclusively for exchange and not available for rental during a 31 – day post – deposit period – will be implemented on or before April 11, 2011 according to the letter from RCI’s attorney.

While the letter speaks of implementation of the resolution of the trading power issue on or before April 11, 2011, it has now been put into place. So it is possible that members may likewise see the exclusive exchange period implemented well before the promised April 11,2011 date.

Dixie Stampede's Final Season - Pirate's Voyage to Open in June 2011

All good things must come to an end and Dixie Stampede is no exception. Dixie Stampede will kick off its farewell celebration with the popular Christmas Spectacular through December 31, 2010 in Myrtle Beach. So make plans now to see Dixie Stampede for the last time!

In June of 2011, Dolly Parton will hoist the Jolly Roger and tilt her sails to the wind, transforming Dixie Stampede into the Pirates' Voyage!

Avoid the Summer Traffic - Republished to Help You Arrive Sooner!

Myrtle Beach can be a very busy place, especially during the summer. Even though heavy traffic is hard to avoid, here are some tips to help make getting here a little easier. We understand that after a long drive, the worst way to begin a vacation is to have to wait in stop-and-go traffic.

Tip #1: Here is a locals’ secret. If you are traveling from the North Myrtle Beach area, avoid 17 Business (also known as Kings Highway) by taking SC 31 (also known as Carolina Bays Parkway) which is a freeway that will take you directly to Highway 544 (also known as Dick Pond Road). But please don’t tell the locals I told you about SC 31; they want to keep it as their little secret.

This secret works both ways. If you want to travel from Plantation Resort north to North Myrtle Beach (including Dixie Stampede, Barefoot Landing, Carolina Opry, Alabama Theatre) and beyond and avoid the 17 Business traffic, take Highway 544 to SC 31. Take SC 31 north to SC 22 (also known as Veteran’s Highway). Go East on SC 22 which will take you back to 17 Business. With the heavy summer traffic, this is always the faster way!

Tip #2: My most used tip! Highway 544 (Dick Pond Road), particularly on weekends during the summer months, can get so busy that it looks like a parking lot. It is especially troublesome the final mile from 17 Bypass (near Wal-Mart) to where Highway 544 ends into 17 Business (Kings Highway). So as you approach 17 Bypass and you see rows of tail lights, take a right (South) onto 17 Bypass and drive approximately 2.4 miles to Glenns Bay Road. Take a left (East) onto Glenns Bay Road and travel approximately 1.5 miles to 17 Business. Take a left (North) on 17 Business and in about 1.5 miles, you will see the Plantation Resort Front Desk on your left. Be sure to exit onto the Frontage Road just after Mason’s Tire to reach the Front Desk where you check in. You have now driven “around the block” and avoided the worst of the stop-and-go traffic on Highway 544.

Even though this “short cut” adds a few miles onto your trip, it will save you many minutes and get you here faster. I use this secret often, especially on Saturdays.

Tip #3: Take the Shuttle. Of course everyone loves the beach! Avoid having to find a parking spot and then pay for it by taking the Resort’s shuttle bus to and from the beach. Keep those parking meter coins for ice cream or maybe a smoothie! See your welcome packet for times and locations. But most of all, enjoy your vacation without all the traffic!

Snow in Myrtle Beach!

Last weekend (Feb 13-14th) the weather channel said that snow fell on almost every state in the nation (48 of the 50). Many of us here on the beach were excited to see snow since it is so rare that we see any of the white stuff. When it does fall, it normally melts in the air or upon hitting the ground. Since it is such an event for us, we wanted to share it with you. Our IT Manager took this photo when he was on a walk at the beach with his family. We hope you like it!

p.s. The snow is all gone now! It only lasted a few days. It's been sunny and in the 50's this week with 60's in the forecast for next. So come visit and warm up with us! Hope to see you all soon!

More Resort Improvements - Double Eagle Dr. Paved and Entrance Improved

The next time you visit Plantation Resort, you're bound to notice two big changes.

The first is the improvements made to Fairway Drive. After receiving special permission from the owners of Fairway Drive (Plantation Resort does not own the road), we repaired the roadway by removing an old eroding conduit under the road that was causing road damage and larger and larger sink holes to appear. We also removed the old railroad tie bed just off the traffic circle and fixed the pond bank that was eroding the road base. These areas are all located between the traffic circle and the entrance to the Resort (Double Eagle Drive). We also cut back the railroad tie bed where the Plantation Resort sign is located and poured a concrete curb making it much easier to make the left hand turn onto Double Eagle Drive entering the Resort. After all these repairs were made, we paved the roadway and improved the drainage so that the road will function well for many years to come!

The second improvement you can't miss! A few years ago we paved the beginning of Double Eagle Drive from the entrance to just beyond the entrance to the Health & Swim Club. Now we've now finished the job by paving the rest of Double Eagle Drive all the way to the end to Building 218.

As a bonus, while we were paving Fairway and Double Eagle Drives, several of the parking lots in the Resort were paved at the same time resulting in substantial savings for the HOAs due to the reduction in costs we received by combining all these paving projects into one large project.

These are just a few more of the many improvements we are continually making to improve "your home away from home." We hope you are able to come and enjoy them soon!

My name is Jennifer Arnez. I won the Wii tournament on my vacation this summer at Plantation Resort. I am a 33 year old mother of 3. I have a son that is 2, a daughter that is 5 and a step-daughter that is 13. I’m an x-ray technologist and love my job! I also love being a mother and wife. My after work hours and weekends are spent at soccer, t-ball and cheerleading with my children. At home we love to play outdoors, swim and go for walks. Inside we play lots of games including board games, card games and, of course, Wii. Our entire family plays Nintendo Wii. My daughter, who has played Wii since she was 3, came in second place in the Wii tournament. My son who is 2 also plays Wii.

This was our first summer staying at Plantation Resort. We happened on the resort by mistake in June and stayed for one week. We liked it so much we came down again in August for another week. We love the children’s water park, lighted playground, the indoor and outdoor activities, the large pool with snack bar and all of the other amenities. It is very family oriented and everyone is very nice. The shuttles to the beach are very convenient and we felt very relaxed staying there. We are deeded to another resort not far from Plantation Resort but we will definitely be spending a lot of our summer vacations with you guys! My children love the resort and all of the activities. They love the dive games by the pool and the indoor activities that get you out of the sun for a break.

I had a lot of fun playing in the Wii tournament and was shocked to hear I had won the drawing! I was very excited! I've never won anything this big before! I really appreciate this and everyone at the resort being so nice and friendly to my family and me. Can't wait to come again!

Another Resort Improvement - Expanding the Front Entrance

We've now expanded the entrance to the parking lot at the Front Desk where you check in. We understand that the Front Desk parking lot can be difficult to navigate especially on busy weekends when the parking lot is full, when you are towing a trailer or driving a large vehicle. So we removed a parking spot and increased the entrance by 8 feet to make it easier to exit and enter onto the frontage road. We've also added lines and directional arrows to help with traffic flow. This is just one example of our many efforts to continually improve the resort. So come visit soon and let us know what you think of our newly expanded entrance!

Danielle Hallam's Surfside Summer Story at Plantation Resort

What happens when a senior from Brigham Young University travels across the country for an internship at Plantation Resort in South Carolina? Well, you can expect some great adventures along the Grand Strand (the area stretching from above North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Georgetown) and a lot of learning opportunities. As a Human Resources major I didn’t expect to learn much this summer that would apply to my field. But working in the recreation department I’ve been able to work with the most important people in any organization—the guests, and gain insight into what it takes to make a resort (or any operation) run smoothly. My name is Danielle Hallam, and this is my Surfside Summer Story.

Let’s cover the good stuff first, what I do for fun in a resort town. I’ve had some great adventures in the Myrtle Beach area. I have visited the Boone Hall, Hopsewee, and Magnolia Plantations, taken the ferry to Fort Sumter, lost to my roommates at putt-putt, boogie boarded at the beach, kayaked along the waterway, caught a firefly, learned to slalom ski, spotted gators, watched a Pelicans game, lost at putt-putt again, pet sting rays, caught a shark while deep sea fishing, perused the markets in Charleston, learned to surf, built stellar sand castles, and lost at putt-putt a few more times. It’s definitely been a summer to remember, but not just because of sightseeing. Working at Plantation Resort has taught me a lot.
My favorite part of working at Plantation Resort is meeting so many interesting people. I meet a lot of great families when I work activities like the rubber duck races at the Lazy River and the ever popular tie dying t-shirts. Tie dye is always a lot of fun. I love it when the kids make amazing shirts and their parents are so impressed they have to make one for themselves. My favorite venue has to be the dinners. The atmosphere at the Sticky Fingers BBQ and the Tie Dye Fish Fry are fantastic. Live music, good food, great people—and I get paid to be there.

So what will I take with me from my summer in Surfside? Well, there is the slight tan line from spending time at the beach and my amazing tie dye skills. But, more importantly I’ve learned some valuable lessons from working at Plantation Resort. I’ve been able to be a part of the planning and preparation necessary to make a good event/activity a success. I’ve also learned a lot about the importance of employee training and motivation that will be a great help as I graduate and begin my career. Although my putt-putt skills have not improved, my knowledge has increased over my summer at Plantation Resort.

Katie Butterfield's Summer Internship Experience

Hi, I’m Katie and I’m from Peru. I spent this summer working as an intern at Plantation Resort. This is my first time in South Carolina and I loved my experience here! The scenery is gorgeous in and around the Resort. My best memory is sitting inside during thunderstorms and watching the beautiful lightning show!

Throughout the summer I’ve helped with many of the activities offered at Plantation Resort. We provided great activities for the whole family. My favorite activity has been tie-dying t-shirts. Helping guests tie their shirts and then watch as they add multiple bright colors was so fun. I loved to see their faces as they untied their shirt and saw their amazing creation!

I have spent time working at each of the three pool areas: indoor, outdoor, and lazy river. My favorite is the lazy river and watching the toddlers play in the kiddie pool. They have so much fun making friends and playing with their toys in the water. It’s also fun to watch families as they float around and around the lazy river having a great time together.

Having the opportunity to work at a beautiful resort all summer was exciting! I’ve been able get to know the great staff at the Resort and interact with wonderful guests. I loved talking with and getting to know so many people from so many diverse places. It was an incredible experience helping to provide our guests with a memorable summer vacation!

My Summer Internship Experience by Lizzy King

Hi! My name is Lizzy King. I am studying Recreation Management, with an emphasis in Leisure Services Management, at Brigham Young University (BYU), in Provo, Utah. I applied and was accepted for a summer internship with Plantation Resort in their Recreation Department.

Working at Plantation Resort this summer has been a wonderful experience. As an intern I’ve been able to work in many different capacities. It has been wonderful to see the Resort from many different perspectives. I’ve worked as a pool attendant, activities assistant, grill cook, breakfast buffet cashier, evening event specialist, and indoor pool receptionist. I have also worked with management on a variety of special projects. The most fulfilling aspect while working at Plantation Resort was helping with activities. It is a wonderful time to be able to get to know the guests and help them have a great time while on vacation.

While working at Plantation Resort I have learned a lot of things that will help me in my future career. By watching the management here at the Resort I have learned so much about how to be a good manager. I have also learned the importance of proper employee training. In the future I want to do fundraising and events planning so working at the evening events have been a great learning experience for me.

In addition to having a great time working at Plantation Resort I have also loved living in the Myrtle Beach area. There are so many fun things to do here in Myrtle Beach as well as the surrounding areas. I enjoyed two trips to Charleston and one to Columbia this summer. There’s lots of history to experience and beautiful things to see. Plus, it’s always great to spend a day at the beach!

Tie-Dye Wednesdays

Wednesday is probably my favorite day at the resort. From 11:30 - 1:00 pm every Wednesday afternoon I get to help at the Tie-Dye T-Shirts activity. Each week we tie-dye about 50 shirts for guests of all ages. After choosing their shirt, our guests decide on the type of tie-dye design they want--swirls, stripes, or a bullseye (diagonal stripes are my favorite). A few "precise" folds or twirls of the shirt, some strategically placed rubberbands, and they are on their way to the tie-dye table to choose from the rainbow of colors. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, teal--so many possibilities. After dunking and squirting the dye into the mass of t-shirt, the moment of unveiling is my favorite part. I am still amazed that somehow the folding and dipping creates these mind-boggling designs. Stop by the Activity Center on a Wednesday afternoon and you can see the bright designs drying on the fence, our own little museum from the sixties, or see the shirts styled by the guests who wear them to the fish fry that night. I'm Back for the Summer!

Ever wonder who the person is behind the posts? I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is April Hallam and I'm back for my second summer at Plantation Resort. I love the outdoors, hiking, waterskiing, rock climbing, and running. Three years ago I came out during my summer break from college (Brigham Young University, in Utah) to work and save some money. I loved being in Surfside! In Utah, the mountain lakes where we play during the summer NEVER get warm, but in Surfside the beach is ALWAYS warm! I loved the Southern charm and hospitality, and I loved working with the great staff at Plantation Resort...so I'm back for another summer.

So much has changed since I was here last. I've now graduated from college and teach high school in Utah and help coach the cross country team. I still have my summers off, and decided to spend this one at the beach once again. When I got back to the resort I noticed so many changes. When I left, we were just starting to put the black shutters on the buildings, and now all of the buildings have a spruced up look with the shutters. When I left we had only just started installing the sidewalks, and now you can walk on the sidewalks all the way to the lazy river and outdoor pool. The Welcome Center has been renamed the Preview Center and is refurbished and up to date. There are more palmettos in the landscaping around the resort and more greenery in general. One of my big projects last time I was here was helping with our brand new Pig Pickin' and Shag, the BBQ on Tuesday nights, and now we have TWO different dinner venues offered at the resort, with the new Tie Dye Fish Fry (see post below). Left and right I find something new or improved at Plantation Resort. Perhaps my favorite new discovery is the cute, wooden playground down in the Presidential Villas. My nephew LOVED playing on the swing set.

The great thing is that the improvements only continue and I get to be a part of them once again. We are currently working on making wireless internet available in the rooms throughout the resort, so if you notice construction down Garden Drive during your visit, know that we are working quickly to make this newest amenity available for your convenience. Why the "Tie Dye Fish Fry"?

What's in a name? This infamous question posed by a star-struck lover has been raised at Plantation Resort as well. Why call it the "Tie Dye Fish Fry"? Why not just the "Fish Fry"? Because Juliet had it wrong. A name is not artifical and meaningless, but has the potential to portray the essence of the person, object, or in this case, event. You see, the fish fry at Plantation Resort is more than just a dinner where fried fish and french fries are served. It is an event that includes not only a traditional, homecooked, southern meal, but live music provided by Hawaiian Breeze to set the tone for a night of fun and excitedment at the outdoor pool. After you've savoured your dessert, jump up and dance to the music. Take a dip in the pool to cool off, and then sing along to the band. Feeling brave? Show us your moves in a dance contest. It's sure to be an evening of fun for the whole family. Now how do we portray all of that to our guests by merely calling it the "Fish Fry"? What represents fun and carefree nights better than the bright, eccentric mix of colors in tie-dye that automatically takes you back to the summer nights of your youth? What's New at Plantation Resort?

Plantation Resort is proud to unveil our latest improvement...our very own Kiwi Shade. We are always looking for ways to improve the resort and make it more comfortable for our guests. The cool new blue shade at the Poolside Grill offers guests a little more shade from the South Carolina sun while they enjoy a relaxing lunch at the outdoor pool. Tropical Climate for Teens

What does Plantation Resort have to offer teenagers? In addition to the fun to be had at the outdoor pool and lazy river, we have activities especially for you! Join us for pizza and a movie on Monday to meet new friends. Meet up with those friends again Tuesday for a game of pool for teens only, or water volleyball on Wednesdays. Thursday and Friday compete in our Wii Tournament for a chance to win a weeks stay at the resort.
